Separator elements are used as the second stage of high-performance separation in filter/water separators. After emergence from the coalescer, aviation fuels pass through the pores of the separator element while the hydrophobic separator surface repels water droplets. Water droplets settle into the filter/water separator sump to be drained off.
Separator elements can be reused after cleaning during coalescer element changeouts. Small areas of damage can be repaired.
Separators are constructed from an epoxy-coated steel inner tube which is then covered with a separator screen. This screen can be made from either a Teflon-coated Stainless Steel mesh or a synthetic plastic mesh. The end caps are made from glass fibre-reinforced polyamide. NBR (Buna-N) end seals are fitted.
